Went to Ennis, Montana yesterday morning, and met our long-time friend and fishing outfitter, Dave Hall from there. Headed south or upstream along the Madison River and put in the drift boat at Palisades Access Site. Very cool morning, being only in the 40s when we launched, with a pretty good breeze going as well. Sweatshirts were required! However, the day was bright, sunny and cloudless in the morning, so both the water and the air warmed up pretty quick there.

Started the day, and ended it as well, fishing up top, with the little Hopper pattern known here as the Fat Albert. For those who may not know, Fat Albert is a cartoon character popularized by Bill Cosby.

Ours were a bit darker than that one, and the thread underbody was red. Sized at a 8. Herself hit on a 14” Brown trout, about 50 yards off the ramp and the catching was on! I got into some smaller trout, mostly Rainbows, with a few browns, soon after, mine going only 10” or so, but definitely feisty little devils! I hooked one pig of a Rainbow, that broke off my Albert, on 4x tippet! It was also a brand new leader, but the best I got was the old Rodeo Ride and snap! Frusteratin! So, Dave sorted out my leader-tippet after that to go 3x, and no more were lost to “snap” the rest of the day. The biggest fish of the day was a 20” brown that I got on old Albert (hey, hey hey!). Herself had two 18” trout, one a handsome Rainbow and one a Brown. All day, we each were hooking and netting trout in the 10-12” range, even many much smaller. Some, so small, we joke about them being fish sticks in the rough! :D

The really unusual thing about yesterday, was the sheer number of large trout, both Browns and Rainbows that would come up to inspect old Albert, maybe even roll on him, and not eat him! Maddening! There you are, drifting the hopper along so nice, when under him you see a Trident Nuclear Submarine class Brown or Bow ascend from the depths, nose your Albert, slap at it, or just seem to look at it…but not eat it! Most come up under, sort of head-first and you see that head and want to shout..Eat that Fly! Then it disappears into the depths again. One, a Rainbow, actually cruised just under my Albert for a few seconds, showing me his entire profile, and then down again he went! The adrenaline rush is almost overwhelming, followed by a serious collapse into a pile of frustrated fly flinger on the seat of a drift boat, holding back the tears! :(

We landed at Storey Ditch about 3:30PM, worn out, but happier than a pig in new mud too!

Dear Coast Guard
43 years ago today I started my adventure, when the recruiter arrived at my house at 0900 to pick me and my two friends up to give us a ride to Cleveland Ohio and the Airport. It was an adventure and we were all smiles and excited no fears or homesickness yet. Me and the boys thought heck nine weeks of camp life how bad can it be?
Well we arrived at a Restaurant in Cape May a little Pizzeria with our instructions to call this phone number. Well we noticed more young fellas arriving and soon a guy in uniform arrived with a lot of stripes a red agitate and a swagger stick and he was not Father Murphy all of you A holes that joined my Coast Guard get on that ******* bus and shut your ******* mouth. As all of you know this was just the beginning of the fun and the night was sheer terror. Push ups and the sentence of the night asked you was always “What the **** are looking at” Give me 20!
The next morning they fed us and the nine week guys serving told us they are forming companies tomorrow you better pray that you don’t end up with BM1 Turner. Well gentleman, I did end up with BM1 Turner as the Bad Cop and Chief Ladd as the Good Cop and BM1 Turner was one bad ass SOB that when it was all said and done I am glad I served under him. Thanks Boats for turning a scared Kid in to A Man.
Today this 61 year old still:
{1} Loves Captain Crunch Cereal
{2} when I leave a sales meeting always says to the folks “Smoke em if ya got em”
{3} The words Clown and Grinder does not mean the same to me as it does a non Coasty
{4} A door is a hatch, A wall is a Bulk Head, and I walk on the Deck.
{5} Has the shiniest shoes in the company. A little water and Kiwi amazeing.
{6} When I am at a store and my wife says give me 20 I start doing pushups.
All Kidding aside I thank you Coast Guard for the education and the Privilege to serve with some of the finest men in the world. The Only mistake I made was 39 years ago today I took those discharge papers.

I hadn't planned on buying another pipe right now (famous last words), but Milan was having a sale on some Savinelli models, and, well, what can I say. This is a Milano 05, which is part of one of their higher-end lines.

Now I promise not to buy any more pipes this year. I mean it. I really do.

I signed up for the Altaldis free sample a few weeks ago and today I recieved a 1.5oz tin of Sutliff Maple Street. An aromatic flavored with maple and old rum.
Has anyone tried it before? Any opinions other than Tobacco reviews website? I tried 2 flavored aromatics before and did not like them. One was Smoker Friendly's Cherry -aweful. The other was a Rum deal (also aweful) from a local B&M that has gone way down hill since being bought out by Smokes 4 Less. Maybe I just don't like the flavored stuff?
Thanks,
I for one understand your initial cry, always wondered why certain posters here added nothing and went other places and were VERY ACTIVE even changing their posting styles. Just sayin.. "

I'm wondering if posting in multiple fora gives freeway for posters to assume different personalities. Or is it the ambience and environment of each forum are evolving into different directions, and the m-poster is just being adaptive?

Another example of the nature vs. nurture thang?

OPINIONAUGUST 31, 2010, 7:26 A.M. ET
Glenn Beck's Happy Warriors
You probably couldn't have found a more polite crowd at the opera.
By JAMES FREEMAN

Washington, D.C.

Pundits will debate whether the crowd at Glenn Beck's Saturday rally in Washington was the largest in recent political history, but it was certainly among the most impressive.

Mr. Beck is a television host and radio broadcaster with a checkered past and a penchant for incendiary remarks. But if he's judged by the quality of people of all colors that he attracted to the Lincoln Memorial, his stock can't help but rise.

Jason Riley discusses Glenn Beck's rally at the Lincoln Memorial.

One would not be able to find a more polite crowd at a political convention, certainly not at a professional sporting event, probably not even at an opera. In fact, judging by the behavior of the attendees following the event, you'd have a tough time finding churches in which people display more patience as others make their way to the exits.

This army of well-mannered folks that marched into Washington seemed comprised mainly of people who had once marched in the U.S. Army or other military branch, or at least had a family member who had. Perhaps that's not surprising, given that the event was a fund-raiser for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides scholarships to the children of elite troops killed in the performance of their duty. The day was largely devoted to expressions of gratitude for the sacrifices of U.S. soldiers, for great men of American history like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and for God.

But it didn't end there. Dave Roever, a Vietnam veteran, offered a closing prayer in which he thanked the Lord for the president and for the Congress. Despite the unpopularity of the latter two, no booing or catcalls could be heard.

Perhaps feeling defensive about how they would be portrayed in media reports, various attendees wore t-shirts noting that they were "Not violent" or "Non-violent." For other participants, there was no need for an explicit message. Relaxed young parents felt comfortable enough to push toddlers in strollers through the crowded areas along the memorial's reflecting pool.

Not only was the rally akin to a "huge church picnic" (in one Journal reporter's description), but one had to wonder if the over-achievers in this crowd actually left the area in better shape than they found it.

After the event, walking from the Lincoln Memorial's reflecting pool through Constitution Gardens, this reporter scanned 360 degrees and could not see a scrap of trash anywhere. Participants and volunteers had collected all their refuse and left it piled neatly in bags around the public garbage cans. Near Constitution Avenue, I did encounter one stray piece of paper—but too old and faded to have been left that day.

Given the huge representation of military families at the event, maybe it's not surprising the grounds were left ship-shape. A principal theme of the day was that attendees should restore the country by making improvements in their own lives—be the change you wish to see in the world, as Gandhi once put it.

Most of the participants were strictly amateurs in the business of activism. For many, it was their first appearance at a public demonstration. Their strikingly mild-mannered nature might inspire even Mr. Beck to acknowledge that in a crowd estimated at 300,000, the craziest person at the event might have been the one with the microphone. While he admits that he's part entertainer and prone to over-the-top comments, his followers appear to be sincerely responding to his message that Americans need to cling to their best traditions. (Mr. Beck's program appears on the Fox News Channel, which is owned by News Corp., which also owns this newspaper.)

The conservative Mr. Beck's ability to draw this many people to Washington may suggest enormous gains for Republicans come the fall. But the GOP shouldn't expect voters to simply hand them a congressional majority without making them earn it. If pregame chatter and off-season optimism translated into victory, the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins would meet in the Super Bowl every year.

Between Saturday's crowd in Washington and the tea partiers agitating for limited government, we may be witnessing the rebuilding of the Reagan coalition, the "fusion" of religious and economic conservatives that political theorist Frank Meyer once endorsed. Reagan always believed that the Republican Party was the natural home for this movement, but GOP leaders in Washington need to prove they are worthy of it.

Mr. Freeman is assistant editor of the Journal's editorial page.

Just puffed this in a GBD Brunette 2170, a slightly bent brandy with oval shank and saddle bit. The oval is actually ridged, much like the Savinelli 413 (which is a Dublin).

Anyhow, yesterday I started with Skiff in a Lee bulldog. Lately I've preferred it to SL when it comes to a morning starter with Lat but emphasis on Orientals characteristic of SG's offerings. Skiff is steadier than SL, being less picky as to the pipe, but the Skiff didn't taste up to par. Maybe all the Lakeland flakes I've been puffing have decalibrated my taste buds.

Anyway, today's Preludio was thoroughly delightful, as always, and the interplay between the Latakia, sweet Orientals and VA was compelling. Others in this space for me are Pelican and possibly H&H Namaste and Grant's Balkan Light. I'll have to do some checking.

The cherry blend that suits me best is Captain Black Cherry. Now, if you really, really like cherry flavor with your black Cavendish then that is the one for you, at least from those I’ve tried. In fact, for me it is sooo cherry, I have to cut it with something else. Also, I may use a wee pinch now and then as an add-in to a bowl of mostly something else, most often other OTC blends. I like a wee pinch of it in Half & Half.

One way I do enjoy it, as the main component of a bowl full, is to add a wee pinch of either black or brown twist from G&H. The decision on black or brown is just a mood thing with me. Brown is stronger, and black is a tad sweeter to me than the brown. It does not totally mute the cherry flavor, but adds some zing! Hence..the name..Twisted Cherry.

I'm a fan of Pipestud's, as well as some EBay. So I often find tins of a certain age coming across my doorstep. In some cases, these are old vintages of currently available blends. But what I find myself doing is not popping my new treasures. Instead I get a current production tin to train my palate.

Anyone else use the same approach?

History of Conservatives and Liberals

For those that don’t know about history ... Here is a condensed version:

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic
hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and
would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and
the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer.
These were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the
catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals, and
2. Conservatives.

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of
agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so
while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented,
they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to BBQ at night while
they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the
conservative movement...

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the
conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQ's and doing the sewing,
fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. They became known as
girlie-men. Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of
cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of
Democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives
provided.

Over the years conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most
powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the
jackass for obvious reasons.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white
wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well
done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare.

Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have
higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal
injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists
are liberals. Liberals also invented the designated hitter rule because it
wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink domestic beer, mostly Bud or Miller. They eat red meat
and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big game hunters, rodeo
cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police
officers, engineers, corporate executives, athletes, members of the military,
airline pilots and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who
own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and
decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more
enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in
Europe when conservatives were coming to America. They crept in after the Wild
West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history:

It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond
to the above before forwarding it.

A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of
this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers and
to more liberals just to piss them off.
And there you have it. Let your next action reveal your true self.....I'm going to have another beer.

Gallaher's Irish Cake - Think Petersons 3 Ps on steroids. Rich, fragrant, strong. Like all bar tobacco - soothing and comforting preparation ritual. Used to be made 30 odd miles from me but for some reason only sold in The Southern Hemisphere. A friend in Australia used to send me some - I have 100 gm left for very special occasions. I'd kill for one of these :)

I've lately taken to starting a bowl and if something came up, putting it aside and coming back later. Virginias seem to like this treatment, and with the heavier GH flakes, I'll be trying the technique out.

Some of my medium and light Lats, which have a good slug of Virginia, DGT well. My one attempt with Pirate Kake was horrid.

So what rule of thumb can I apply to DGT-friendly blends?
