Meerschaum pipe smokers

I have only one Meer,a no name that my brother gave me.His buddy brought it back from Turkey are a tour with Uncle Sam. After getting it home I found out why he gave it to me. It was so plugged up I could not draw through it.It had been used for a long time smoking some of that funny smelling tobacco. I have never smoked it! Almost afraid to!

well, I went'n dood it, and got an Altinok slightly prepuffed from shaggy. It is interesting going through my standards as controls, and the taste is definitely different. Today it did a nice job on Pembroke, which I am trying to decide if it is going to be cellared.
Alas, my Top50 has overgrown its bounds and appears to be nearing 60. But that is progress, since I have 335 blends, mostly Lats and mostly open. I am not as promiscuous as one might think, since I have gone through maybe a hundred others that never got past a trial bowl.
Every few days, I pop one of my several dozen unopened blends to see what else might vie for Top50ness. This last several rounds has surfaced Pelican, Red Raparree, Owl Shop Harkness Tower, Olsen 222 and Mission Pipes Chaparral into contention. But I have eliminated a handful of others, so they will be consumed but not reordered.

Don't own a meerschaum pipe so I'll be reading this thread everyday.

Wow, I just went through my inventory to discover I have eight meerschaum pipes. Most are pretty inexpensive ones I picked up on eBay, but one is a rather nice SMS eagle-claw style I bought new and am patiently coloring.

The others ranged me from $6 to $30 and include a Barling, two Pioneer pokers, an Arda, and the remainder unknown brands, except two marked "Tanganika Meerschaum". Plus one recent eBay win on a GBD meer still awaiting delivery.

Curiously, regardless of price, none of them are bad smokers, though. Quite probably contrary to what many hard-core meerschaum afficienados may say about 'cheap' meerschaum pipes.

Thanks for the reminder that I should stop neglecting these fine-smoking pipes as much as I seem to have been doing lately.

after I thought my Altinok sated my meer-PAD, I found an almost unsmoked SMS lattice for 10.50, so now I have 2 recent blocks. I thought meers didn't have individual personalities, tastewise, as briars do, but this SMS does taste slightly different.
Oh - I also have a nice GBD meer lined with a Perspex stem and and olivewood meer lined Kilimanjaro - both are similarly neutral.

I wish I could answer that question. At the moment I have three of them, one is an Altinok, the other two I have no idea who made them. Though the Altinok is a quality pipe, I prefer the other two just because they have larger air passages.

I have one Meer and it is fantastic! Comoy's Man Pipes - excellent pipe.

There are a lot of crappy ones out there.
In my opinion, a crappy meer is worse than a crappy briar.

I have two IMPs and two Bakis; they are really good pipes
and they are great smokers. They have briar type delrin tenons.

I am thinking the larger pipes with the larger push-pull and, perhaps, more open airways are the cat-daddys. I have one small lattice/hand meer, 3/4 bent, that resists a pipecleaner and is a gurgle-meister. It was neat looking but, in the end, a really bad buy from a local B&M.

Since then I have purchased two other no-names, both large, and they're brilliant smoking pipes. One, seen here (http://meerschaummerchant.com/p-799-...eerschaum.aspx) is a large dublin; the other is an equally large rhodesian (http://i37.tinypic.com/14m96om.jpg).

I have a meer bowl for a falcon. I don't smoke it a lot but it does have it's place. I hesitate to say this as I know not many, if any will agree with me, but it seems to take the edge off some of the stronger tasting tobaccos.
