A doughnut shaped section hacksawed from a meerschaum cigarette holder and carefully placed in the heel of the pipe works great for me. Got the holder on ebay - it has enough material for several such heel pieces. The shank protrusion into the heel should be burned away enough for the meerschaum piece to fit.

Welcome aboard fish. While I would consider A wooden plug to repair a bowl that's been messed up pretty much, I'd never ruin a corncob by using a meerscham plug.
